In a joint statement, both groups advocated restricting the use of mesh implants only to high-risk women who may benefit from the surgery. Both groups also called for the implementation of a national registry system to track past, present and future recipients of transvaginal mesh implants.
In July 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a (new) warning regarding mesh implant devices, advising both patients and doctors of the potential for an increased risk of serious side effects.
